The size of an anchor refers to its weight in air. Anchor holding powers can be calculated from

the anchor's efficiency. This is expressed as a ratio of the anchor's holding power to its weight

in air. These efficiencies range from approximately 0.5:1 for sinkers to a manufacturers' claim

of 40:1 for special high holding power anchors.

 

The efficiency of anchors decreases with increasing anchor size and varies significantly with

materials shown in the following table.

 

Seabed	General Effect on Holding Power
Sand	High, consistent holding power
Mud	Erratic holding power but can be high
Clay	Good holding power
Coral	Fairly good holding power

 

Other considerations when selecting an anchor include the following:

• Its physical strength
• The angle between the shank and flukes
• The angle to which the anchor shank will be raised under maximum conditions
• The permanency of the system
• The installation facilities available at the site
